something about the lyrics, the melody and the sound of jorja's voice in this song is literally hypnotising.
throughout this tune, jorja takes us through her experience of falling and being in love with someone who takes her love for granted. but she's so infatuated that she's do anything to feel their love, no matter how catastrophic the turnout might be or how many people are being played by this person simultaneously.
Lost & Found - Jorja Smith |
'would it be easier if i stayed at home, wasting my time on my own and hoping that you'd come along'. in this early section, jorja's debating whether to give in to the temptation or not; she's thinkin', would it be easier to just sit back and wait for him to come through? or, should i follow my heart?
'would you be honest babe, if i said the words 'do you love me for a moment?', or 'is this just wandering romance?" she's questioning her place in this guy's heart; is this love just for me, or is it for everybody? and, she's straight up questioning this guy himself: if i asked you where we stand, would you lie to me?
this next part gives me goosebumps. 'tell me why you can't control the feelings you desire, burning all my bridges as you set my walls on fire.' she's stopped with the questions now and starts to just say it upfront; telling him to tell her why he can't control his temptation towards her. almost as if she knows that he doesn't wanna be exclusive with her. almost as if she already knows the answer to her own questions. her infatuation with him burned all bridges between and cut all ties with anybody else. since she’s stuck on the bridge between them and his uncertainty lit their bridge on fire, it’s as if the very walls around her are up in flames. even still, she stays there. she identifies so much with this love that it merges with herself; ‘my walls’.
'save me from your promises'. when she sings this, jorja knows that the love she feels is shared with someone else, that his romance is wandering, and she doesn't want this guy to lie and tell her she's the only one receiving this typa love. she knows, and she'd rather save them both the hassle of lying or excuse-making.
'no one cleans the stains, but no-one keeps me dirty like you do.' she likes the rawness of this guy; he's rough-around-the-edges, and doesn't expect jorja not to be. other guys couldn't clean her 'stains', but the fact she appreciates this guy not trying to implies that she appreciates her flaws, and the guy having his own makes her feel accepted with him.
aj tracey sampled this song in ladbroke grove and transformed the vibe completely, but it worked wellllll.
go listen to this 1, you won’t be disappointed. so much could be said about literally every line.
